I long for the old days … When immigrants came to America to become Americans—not to establish colonies of the old country here—but to be full-fledged citizens of the United States of AMERICA! And they did! When immigrants longed to blend into this wonderful world of freedom and opportunity—to learn our language, our history, our stories, our heritage; and make them their own. And they did! When immigrants were delighted to have a hand up, but hungered to gain the knowledge and skills that would enable them to pay their own way and be self-sufficient in this land of the free— And they did! When our government secured our borders, immigrants lined up according to quotas we set and were accepted into our country on our terms, not theirs. And illegals who crashed the party were apprehended and swiftly sent back where they came from with no apologies. When we had standards as to who would be accepted as citizens. Criminals, street thugs, those with infectious diseases and others who would be a threat to our health, well being and national security were weeded out. Period. When the administration in office, media, political-correctness police, and do-gooders didnt lay a guilt trip on us and accuse us of being unloving because we wouldnt fling open our doors to all the poor and needy and those in third-world countries who felt they were unfairly limited and even threatened. When most Americans openly welcomed legal newcomers and helped them find work and a place in our land of the free and home of the brave. When our new citizens, pledged, perhaps with stumbling lips and tongues, their Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, and often, with tears streaming and hands over grateful, fast-beating hearts, sang The National Anthem—now THEIR National Anthem. Those were the days. I dont think you have to be old, as I am, to long for those good-old days. Oh, may they come again! Soon! --Dale
