I love inspiring women stories. And Harvard too!!! Wow. (I just cut & paste from a recent email.) As I might have told you in an earlier email, Ethel “Ellie” Hylton, Harvard Class of 2013, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and graduated on May 30, 2013 with summa cum laude honors. Today I learned that she also won the Sophia Freund Prize (defined below) that is awarded the graduating student with the highest grade point average in the class. It is also interesting—and inspirational—that she is an African American woman and was a varsity athlete, but made no big deal of either. Academic excellence at Harvard is not new in Ellie’s family: Both her mother and father graduated with magna cum laude honors from Harvard in 1982. She is very special and one of the most pleasant persons you’ll ever meet. SOPHIA FREUND PRIZE In accordance with the terms of the Sanford H. E. Freund Bequest to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, a prize was established in 1964 to be awarded annually to the highest ranking undergraduate as determined at the final degree meeting of the Faculty. The award will be made to that student graduating summa cum laude who has the highest grade point average. For further information, please contact the Office of the Dean of Harvard College.
