I love looking at all the greetings people post on Facebook when there’s a birthday. Some simply say “Happy Birthday” while others find the most elaborate, expressive way to state the obvious. Some people can just add their own flavor to the simplest things and make them memorable (think of Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday to JFK). Sophie Tucker, “The Last of the Red-Hot Mammas”, was a performer who was born in Russia, but was known best as a singer, comedian, actress, and radio personality. She was distinctive because of her loud and powerful renditions of comical and risqué songs in the 20s and 30s. She is often imitated by drag queens both here and abroad (as is Marylyn). One of her popular songs was, “Life begins at Forty.” Talked about how we race through life when we are younger but by the time we are 40 we learn to slow down and appreciate quality and beauty in life. Makes you wonder, “Does life really begin at 40?” Well, that might have some validity but we really come “alive” when we make the decision to accept the present God gave us into our lives. He didn’t say we have to work for His gift, He didn’t say we have to be good enough to receive His gift, He simply said that it was free for all because His Son, Jesus paid for each and every person to receive it. So, once we decide to take God at His Word and receive His free gift of eternal life, eternal life begins right that moment. That’s when life really begins to be good. Things happen from the inside out. Suddenly, that one act of receiving causes our heart and mind to chance … we see things differently, we feel things differently, and we have a new perspective that we never had before. Life Begins!!!! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (GWT) “Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence.” Of course it’s up to us what we do with it, but life begins at salvation. If we don’t accept that gift, life goes on…same ole, same ole, with a pinch of anguish. No matter what our natural age, that’s when life begins! “For God loved the world in this way: so much that He would give up His Son, The Only One, so that everyone who trusts in Him shall not be lost, but he shall have eternal life.” John 3:16 (Aramaic Bible). Maybe without the big Facebook fanfare (or an imaginative song), you can still enjoy your “spiritual birthday” today (if you haven’t already). Get started LIVING!!!
