I love to ask the following question to the different departments - TopicsExpress

I love to ask the following question to the different departments (e.g., camera, sound, lighting, wardrobe, etc.) when I teach filmmaking. What percent of your department is the final product? For example, without the camera department, there would be no movie. Thus, camera must be at least 50%. No sound and it’s a silent movie. Thus, sound has to be a good 25% plus. And if you have sound, but it’s bad sound… Well, you’re probably getting the picture (no pun intended). The true answer is each department is 100% and it must be treated that way. Take away quality work from any department and the film will be GREATLY lacking. A good example is the movie Jaws. Take the score away in the scenes where the shark shows up and it’s just some fishing footage. But with the score, you decided to never swim in the ocean again… Producing movies is one of the few professions that truly uses the services of almost all the other professions. Writers, carpenters, hair stylist, designers, electricians, etc., etc. The list truly goes on and on. And each plays a very important role. This week, we’re spotlighting musicians that have worked on R-Squared Production films. It’s a big list for sure, but none bigger than Big Al Cherry. Part of the R-Squared philosophy is to reinvest in our local economy by using as much local talent as possible. And Big Al “fits the bill” perfectly, a local artist with great talent and a heart for the messages in our films. Big Al provided two songs for New Hope (On the Floor & Winner), which truly helped raise the film to a higher level. And, of course, both of the songs are part of the New Hope Soundtrack. And if you’ve never been to a Big Al concert, you’re missing out! You can keep tract of Big Al on his Facebook page - facebook/bigalcherry. And you can see him live on Saturday, April 12th @ 3:30 pm at the Catfish Festival on the Council Stage. To truly understand the power of a properly scored film, we’ve upload the scene from New Hope that contains the song “On the Floor” (youll find the link in the comments below). I love the way the song ends and matches what has happened in the movie. There’s a great story about that, but we’ll save it for another day… So here’s a shout out to Big Al and all the other musicians that help us make movie magic!
