I make it a habit to not very frequently post anything related to all of the tension going on in our culture today. Its not just because I dont like conflict or because I dont care, but more so because anyone who knows me should already know where I stand. Besides, a bald white guy is usually judged before he opens his mouth anyway, and for whatever reason I care what people think about me. But unlike some of my cop/marine buddies, I also choose not to delete Facebook friends who bash police or vocalize/perpetuate race issues. For the same reason I will, from time to time, stomach through a broadcast on NBC or CNN. The reason is because of something Michael Frank taught me about a term called selective perception. I try to expose myself to multiple takes/opinions on an issue and shrug off only the ignorant comments while still hearing out the people that I 100% disagree with. For those of you on my friends list that sometimes say things that fit into this shrug off category - if right now youre questioning whether or not your words belong in that category...they do - I hope you watch this video. And I hope you look at it with an open perspective and put yourself in that reverends shoes. He had the strength to admit what he did at the end and its unfortunate his words will mostly be silenced. Its not going to make a difference for most of those people (and if you just got the urge to call me out for using the term those people, then youre one of those people.) But for a few, it might. And thats more than worth it to me. Now excuse me while I go like the crap out of this news stations page Facebook page.
