I meant to make another post about Wes Anderson week earlier but I held off until I was able to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel. Anderson has an innate style that is really unique and and striking at first glance. Particularly in budapest you see his use of letterboxing to frame the scene used to astonishing effect no only with the now-common 2.35:1 black bars but also the 4:3 16mm film style, and each are used when appropriate. I also really dug his use of wide angle lenses, from what Ive heard he tends to use a 27mm Primo lens and it really appeals to me. Cinematography in most of his films is at the top of its class and furthermore innovative. Definitely a unique kind of filmmaker and impressive in every facet of the medium. My favorite of his films has been The Royal Tenenbaums with Moonrise Kingdom a close second.
