I met Clyde Butcher some years ago at an Art Festival. I was just a few years into my full time status as a freelance photographer. I had previously admired him for following in the footsteps of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and his sons, and others in the f64 group who promoted excellence in black and white photography as an art form. I was considering purchasing one of his prints as an investment. I was carrying my Nikon F2As on a strap around my neck. Butcher looked at it and asked me what I did with that thing. I explained that I carried it around as I believed that a freelancer needed to be ready for whatever reason. He smirked and made a rude reference to the 35mm as a paper weight, turned abruptly away and began a conversation with another prospective customer. I tried to regain his attention without success. I found his work worthy of purchase but I found Mr. Butcher to be a pompous ass. Needless to say he lost any chance of a sale to me that day.
