Ken Nelson - Nelson & Associates (Food Industry Recruiting) Email me@ visit our web pages @ (425)823-0956 Research & Development Technologist POSITION SUMMARY The R&D Technologist will be responsible for working with the ‘think tank’ team to dream up and create new and exciting dried fruit/nutproducts under the industrial and retail business plans. The goal is to stay on the forefront of innovation through trend and market analysis inorder to create new products before our competitors. Primary responsibilities include (but are not limited to): the execution of concept ideasto bench top testing, and ultimately, the creation of new products for consideration by the sales & marketing team. Individual will also beavailable to work on special projects related to industrial processing problem solving needs or new process trials. May be asked to assist inspecial projects related to Sample Laboratory, Incoming Quality Assurance (IQA), Quality Assurance (QA), or Food Safety. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Upholds and handles confidential information with the highest tact and discretion. 2. Understand the concepts of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Safe Quality Food (SQF) auditing, and British Royal Consortium (BRC) auditing. 3. Work with the R&D team and supporting staff to develop formalized product development plans. 4. Design, outline and layout new product projects with experimentation plans. 5. Work independently on product development ideas and projects without continued interface from management and under tightdeadlines. All work is to be compiled and reported quarterly to the R&D Director and/or Vice President of Sales. 6. Document and record details pertaining to all project work. 7. Be able to give presentations to management reporting on project work. 8. Become familiar with processes, ingredients, commodities, blends, raw materials, packaging, documentation, standard operating procedures and new vendors/ingredients related to Company. 9. Will be responsible for the maintenance and sanitation of R&D support equipment as required within the scope of the position. (example: electrical issues will be handled by maintenance) 10. Maintain awareness, handling, and separation of food grade and non-food grade experimentations, including product and equipment. 11. Setup, conduct and maintain shelf life studies. 12. May be asked to interface and direct people in the effort to meet R&D deadlines as required. 13. Perform research to acquire needed information related to the R&D product development effort. This includes onsite at NRCfacility or an off-site location. 14. May be asked to attend marketing meetings to talk about ideas, showcase new product concepts, and set-up/administer product sensory evaluations as needed. 15. Will know how to execute analytical laboratory testing methods related to product development. Will be exposed to and learn water activity, Karl Fisher moisture and High Pressure Liquid Chromatography test methods that apply to Company. 16. Must be open to accepting duties outside of principal area of hire as needed at request of management . 17. Upholds the Company Mission Statement. 18. Request/source ingredients, prepare, ship, and monitor project sample requests. 19. Communicates effectively with management to ensure a correct and timely completion of each and every task. 20. Interface with sales representatives and customer contacts regarding product development focuses and progress. Must be able todeliver information in a professional manner. 21. Abide by established R&D Laboratory Rules. 11. Must learn and adhere to the National Raisin Company values. 22. Setup, conduct and maintain shelf life studies. 23. May be required to assist the Incoming Quality Assurance Division of the QA Department with inspections of raw materials, commodities, nutrition/regulatory, and packaging due to the position’s familiarity with all three. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED A. K n o w le dge : Bachelors of Science degree in food science, agriculture science, microbiology, chemistry, or related science field. 1-2 years experience desired in food product development, food processing and related fields to new product concepts regarding chemical, microbiological, and physical attributes. Understanding of ingredient behavior, shelf life studies, and HACCP certificationdesired. B. Ski l l s: Must be able to effectively communicate with management and surrounding staff members.
