I never thought I would ever encounter a problem big enough to post here, but it finally happened. Last night, a friend Brendon Newman and his wife Annie invited me for dinner at the Lebanese restaurant at the Steigenberger hotel in Luxor. Please keep in mind that Ive been living here 7 years straight, I know the prices, I know the quality etc. I wasn’t going to comment on the food but after what happened to my friends, I feel everyone deserves to know. Firstly everything is overpriced… 4 under-cooked Tamya(falafel) the size of ordinary matchbox, a lousy garlic dip and a few shards of lettuce…LE29. Over my dead body will I pay that… ever…. Not for falafel even if it is made of gold. The mixed grill, shish tahuk, was more like boiled chicken that sat on the grill just to get scorch marks. The rice was dry…and also under-cooked… the vegetables were tasteless. One stick of grilled veggies… I’m not even going to go into detail, it’s not worth it. Anyway… all the food fitted on a grill the size of a normal serving size plate, and not a super sized normal size serving plate. More like a side plate you get at the pizza parlor. If my company was not so fabulous, I would have thrown a hissy fit but I let it go although I was biting my lip to harp at the waiter. After the tasteless overpriced meal, Brendon got the bill. Now wait for this…drum roll please…TTTTRRRRRR! USD300! The beauty of it all is, that he did not even notice it…his wife Annie did. So, we all looked at the credit card slip and it stated USD300! The waiter was called and the more we tell him that it is supposed to be LE300 and not USD300 …the more he tries to convince us it is not USD300 although it clearly states on the receipt that he just swiped the card for USD300. After some fuss the manager was called, who politely didn’t make an issue of it….and by that I mean he acted as if my friends were over reacting. After Annie tore up the receipt and demanded they reverse the transaction, with the waiter still protesting, they eventually did. Unfortunately, I had to leave shortly before they rectified the mistake. But I just got a call from Brendon telling me that they did reverse the transaction, but they were not even offered an apology. I feel and think this is utter rubbish…they came all the way to spend a few days in Luxor, that is already suffering from a lack of tourists. Than this bloody place tries to rip them off, whether it was unintentionally or intentionally, and when they do not succeed and reverse the charges, they do not even apologize. Brendon and his wife will be leaving Luxor on Sunday at 10:00 and they are staying at the Winter Palace. I posted this because I am really hoping that my friends will at least get an apology before they leave, if nothing else. Overpriced, not fresh , tasteless food at the Lebanese restaurant at the Steigenberger Hotel on the Cornische in Luxor.
