I note theres a backlash from some of the public in regards to the kings youngest son Korotangi after he was discharged without conviction. I knew it would come it was only a matter of time and I acknowledge that on the surface it is not a good look yet Im also aware that the media will show only what they a) consider newsworthy and b) what they want you to see. Im mindful of the fact that I dont know all the ins and outs of the case or many particulars pertaining to Korotangi himself, I am however painfully aware of the fact that he will be very much under the microscope both by Tainui and maoridom in general and will no doubt be held to account by those close to the King. I truly do understand the anger of some out in the public arena however had this been any other 19yr old it would probably have barely made the papers but because he is a son of the Maori King suddenly it makes national and international headlines. I would ask therefore that you climb off your high horse of righteous indignation and bare the following in mind - He may not have been convicted, fined or jailed as perhaps most would, instead he will go through the ignominy of bringing shame to the king, the royal family the people of Tainui and maoridom throughout the motu and beyond. Me thinks a fine, conviction or jail may have been a mercy by comparison as opposed to being known far and wide as an idiot teenage boy whose stupidity and larking about has bought the royal family to such national prominence for all the wrong reasons. I do believe however that everyone is of the one mind when we say boy you need to start thinking and behaving in such a manner as to become the man we are sure youre destined to be.
