I now know what it is like to walk into the freezing ocean at a geothermal beach in a bikini while its raining and my Icelandic friends are laughing at me. I also have come to the realization that hot water in Iceland smells of rotten eggs and will leave your hair smelling like rotten egg for a long long time. Hot water also smells like this out of the sink. Somehow it is the best thing. It is also pretty awful. Other mentionables that happened today: I met a woman named björg, another woman named björg, and a man whose name was not björg. Within about an hour, I simultaneously experienced heavy wind, cold rain, and bright, blinding sunlight. I spent an hour on a bus watching the way the moss on the black volcanic rock resembled some sort of delicate, sunlit sea foam. I passed rocks in piles stacked on top of each other in pyramids, as if the elves left them there. Multiple times I had to ask Icelanders to repeat their Icelandic comments to me. I asked them in English. (note to self: stop doing this). I realized that I will never get the hang of converting US Dollars to Icelandic Króna. I ate my first Icelandic food, kjötsúpa, while drinking out of juice boxes with the lovely Ásgeir Bjarnason as we watched the ducks on Lake Tjornin swirl around. I met some wonderful people from all over the world taking the Icelandic course with me starting tomorrow, and it is amazing to know that others are as passionate about Icelandic and Nordic Studies as I am, if not more I also came to the realization that Iceland is not what I expected, but instead is becoming a fresh new landscape of things that are much more intriguing than what I did expect. I dont think I had any major expectations, but I built myself an image of the Island for a year, and wasnt prepared for how insanely ethereal everything has become here. I feel at peace with myself. This places is beautiful, I think a part of my heart is slowly burrowing itself here.
