I observed the recent nova (latin for "new") in Delphinus tonight. A nova is a rapid temporary brightening of a star, usually caused by the star pulling material from a companion star and burning it rapidly. In the process, this star went from being barely visible in my telescope to being visible to the naked eye (although I used binoculars to make sure I was looking at the right star)! To me, the star was yellowish-orange in color and easily one of the brighter stars in the area.
