I often deal with lifes stress by writing poetry. This is one just composed for our Bella (Isabel): About a thousand miles away Where Hound Dog River meets the bay Bella paused beneath the moon-- For she’d be crossing over soon She need just look back one more time Into the world she’d leave behind-- Perhaps then have her spirit melt Into Orion’s buckled belt There were not words she could employ About the effervescent joy That came with each advancing stride When crossing to the other side Perhaps they would not comprehend That one day they would meet again So Bella she sang this lyric tune Directly to the crescent moon “Moon,” she sang, “You sit so high A granite marble in the sky-- Tell them there is so much more Once they reach the other shore” “Tell them moon theres much to love Each time they see you poised above-- Tell them gently, tell them moon Tell them theyll be gathered soon” As Bella took one lasting look Before her time to cross the brook She saw a host of other pets (Most of whom she’d never met) They all had come from far way Down toward the river by the bay To pause beneath the crescent moon For they too would be crossing soon Then all the dogs got on a boat (Although, of course, dog spirits float) And each was swept up high above But left behind a wisp of love And of those people living yet What should they learn and not forget? That each dog lent a special grace And made this world a better place Perhaps we too will follow soon And pause beneath the crescent moon To find paw prints along the way Where Hound Dog River meets the bay
