I often find myself in mtgs w/ ppl that feel unheard, disrespected & angry. These people come from all sectors: residents, politicians, organizations, businesses, developers, etc. All have been wronged by someone else, some entity or the system. Communication stops & adversarial relationships are forged. I listen to both sides...expressing the same frustrations, experiencing the same suffering, equally as fearful of & resistant to re-engaging w/ the other... It is difficult to re-engage once youve been hurt, to forgive & let go of our pain-for many ppl its become part of their identity, their role in our communities-but as I sit & listen I cant help but ask if there really is another way to move forward... So when will we let go of our suffering & allow ourselves to heal, to listen & be heard? When will we put our egos, pride & fear aside to engage in dialogue, to forgive- ourselves & the other? Letting go of your anger & pain does not mean forgetting injustices, weakness or that you lose. It is a sign of compassion- to yourself & the other. Help a sister out, start forgiving & being compassionate to yourself & the other- it is one way to start healing & move forward as an individual, community & city.
