I often get asked by readers if I can mentor them, or read manuscripts for them. I always feel honoured to be asked, but unfortunately I simply don’t have the time to do the requests justice. I also wouldn’t want to have to pick one and not another, as that seems so unfair. So I figure it makes sense to put out this post to say that I’m sorry I can’t do this, but really everything I have to say that’s worth saying is in the books. And it’s all second-hand anyway. As you know if you’re a reader, I just pass on other people’s wisdom. If you want a mentor, I recommend you find someone you know personally and can meet with from time to time. Choose someone you consider wise, who inspires you, and is willing to help. In the end, whatever you want to achieve, you have to do it for yourself. A mentor will simply support you, but this doesn’t call for a specialist in your field. Their focus is on you, not on the work. Good luck and work hard!
