I often see ill informed riders see-sawing on the horses mouth to get their horse as they describe; On the bit. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. The horse needs to be ridden from the seat and leg FIRST. The illustration below shows how the energy needs to flow from the riders leg, up the horses neck to the mouth, through the rein and up the riders arm back and seat, through the horses hind end and back to the leg. If the rider blocks the energy through poor position, heavy hands, tense arms, or rigid back, the horse will become stiff and resistant as well and will not be able to progress properly up the training tree.
