I once read a profound statement – those who have died now know The Reality, but can no longer do good deeds. Those who are alive can do, but they do not know... Every soul shall taste death. I have not yet tasted it, but I have touched it – it is cold. It is that which turns food and drink into ash when it enters your mouth. It nests in the pit of your stomach, churning and eating away at the edges of your being. It is also that which removes doubt in the inevitable destination. When the burden of life is heavy, so heavy that you feel your knees are about to buckle and the muscles in your hands have seized up from carrying this weight, you may look towards the ground and wonder if dying would be easier than this... People wish for an end to pain, but they do not really wish for death – at least not if they knew what would come after. Not if they knew that they would be alone, utterly and profusely alone beneath the soil, with only their belief in God and deeds as shields. Not if they knew they would be able to hear the footsteps of those they love, leaving them behind to fend for themselves. Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) said, Do not wish for death, for the terror of the place whence one looks down is severe... Do not wish for it, but know that The Inevitable will come, and it will not stop to ask for your permission. When your head goes down in prayer and your forehead touches the ground, know that it is the same ground in which you will be buried. So stay there, breathe in the scent of the earth, dig your hands into it, make it familiar to all your senses. It will be your home, for a time.
