I post this on behalf our amazing Supporter Elizabeth Pavlou and how she felt in her first visit in Dali pound:) We need all the help we can get to help our angels pls read it and help us with every way you can we have more than 80 dogs in our care and we cant cope anymore:( DALI POUND – A VIEW OF A NEW COMER For a while I have been wondering what I could physically do to help dogs. Am I rich? Answer no, do I work full time? Answer yes. So funds limited, time limited but that didn’t mean I couldn’t do something. I decided to start by spending a couple of hours on Saturday morning at Dali pound. Upon arrival the first thing that hit me was the sheer noise created by so many vying for attention and being in a limited space. Marilena Peppou, one of the volunteers that works tirelessly for all of them, patiently explained everything to me. She immediately set to work scrubbing clean the cubicles, refilling food, cleaning out water bowls, even administering deworming pills that were desperately needed by one dog. I helped as best I could being new and inexperienced. I very quickly understood just how much these girls physically do. Every little being I met had a different sad story to tell, all abandoned, some just dumped at the pound. A tiny puppy had just been dumped and Marilena immediately stepped into action to find a foster for it, some were scared, some too thin, some perhaps were not small or cute enough or simply their irresponsible owners could not be bothered. 1 little poodle with a lovely pink collar looked completely bewildered as if she wanted to say “Just take me out of here” two other poodle crosses did not move, did not eat or react in any way as if they were afraid of provoking any other dog or had simply given up on life. These were the two I spent most time with and these were the two hardest to leave. The others were amazing, some sad, all vying for your attention, all innocent, all so grateful for a tiny bit of attention, a small tasty treat, all with so much to give and none should be here. Was it hard to leave? Definitely. Will I return? Absolutely. It was then onto the private kennels that the volunteers struggle month after month to pay for as there is simply not enough room at the pound. So on to my big question (there is no criticism here or judgment in any way) to all those that care (not to those you will retort that millions are starving in Africa, people are hungry in Cyprus etc. but then proceed to not help them either) is 1. Dali D.O.G. has almost 3,000 members, so it’s the responsibility of every single one of those 3000 to help, not the same 20 people or so that do. Even €1 per month from each member would come up to €3000 that could provide probably provide enough to cover the cost of kennels, food, vets etc. Who can’t spare €1?? The volunteers cannot and should not have to be worried sick day in day out about where the money will come from, they simply work too hard, trying to do the absolute best for all dogs. 2. How about physically helping out? How about volunteering a couple of hours a week to help walk, play, clean, take to vets etc.? 3. Please offer suggestions for fundraisers, something that will work and bring in new people, new funds and highlight this worthy project. Just question yourself “ What have I physically done to help?” good intentions are all well and good but its actions that are needed and its actions that count. It’s time to stop all the “Oohs and ahhs” and “this is terrible” and actively do something, however small to make things better. I apologize if I am stating the obvious but please share to help find homes and foster homes, perhaps you can foster, don’t buy- always adopt, spay and neuter, educate those around you anything and everything helps. To those that actually read this thank you, for those that will actually physically do something a million thank you’s not from me but from all the dogs below and all those that will take their place when they find homes that are counting on us. They have no voice so it’s up to us all to fight for them today for a better and kinder tomorrow! . PS. A huge thank you to all the girls of Dali D.O.G i.e.
