I posted the following as a reply in a thread. It would like to share it as something which will hopefully help White Conservatives to understand how a Black Conservative like myself could come to have such distrust in the Police. I said, When I was growing up, my stepfather was a member of the NYC Police Auxiliary. I had a chance to get to know officers personally. Much of what I know about real life I learned from Det. John Savage, who was one of NYCs first Black Det. Sargents. I had grown up earlier in Nashville, where the future (first Black) Captain J. Boddenhammer was the father of one of my closest friends Barry. He was not just a policeman, but a pillar of our community. These men were both Officers of the Peace and Law Enforcement Professionals. They set the bar for my expectations of Police. But, years of living in the 79th. Precinct, where Eleanor Bumpers was executed by cop & having our family business in the 81st. Precinct, where Frank Serpico was assigned I got a different perspective on police and policing. I learned about breaking cherries, elevator rides, how to make a snitch, and OLearys Rule; the OLearys rule! I took away a profound mistrust for police and especially the NYPD. And it wasnt the media, rabble rousers, poverty pimps, the Democratic Party, Liberals, the Black Panthers or anything other than the Police themselves which changed my opinion. It began with the kid whose killing by the police set off the 1966 riots and finally; irredeemably set in stone by the treatment of Abner Louima and the murder by cops of Amadou Diallo. Now, I no longer give he Police the benefit of the doubt. They have lost the right to it and it is unlikely they will ever regain it.
