I posted the other day about our elderly sanctuary dog Merlyn at New York Westie Rescue and the lump that developed at the surgical site where he had a ceruminous adenosarcoma removed. I first of all, apologize for not posting sooner but I have been absolutely gutted. The news was not good. There was no infection. That would have been a better diagnosis than the terminal one I received. It seems that the tumor has returned with a vengeance, and has spread to the cartilage of the outer ear, around the base of it and more than likely to the inner ear canal, and while this type of cancer rarely spreads, it seems that our little Lord Merlyn is one of the rare cases in which it has. Given his advanced age, I made the decision not to pursue additional radical surgery and aggressive radiation therapy, which is extremely hard on them and lasts for 5 to 6 weeks during which time they must be away from home, only returning on the weekend and that also has some pretty severe and painful side effects. We are keeping him comfortable with pain control and lots of love. At this point the cancer has not spread to his lungs and his liver tests are quite good. He might be with us another few months, weeks or days. There is really no way to know. He will let me know when it is time. In the meantime we will provide palliative care and on his good days, make sure that he gets to enjoy his favorite things.Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concern and prayers for our sweet old boy.
