I posted this as a comment on a friends page. I cant lie. As a chick, I agree that the rings are ridiculous and ultimately one of the worst investments someone can make. Given the rate of divorce in this country, its beyond insane. And it doesnt help that it harkens back to the days when dowries were part of the engagement/marriage negotiation process, as well as the exploitive colonial monopolies in Africa stripping the continent of various resources: diamonds, gold, silver, etc. It used to be that a simple wedding band would suffice, but then DeBeers happened. And Marilyn Monroe. She didnt help either.
