I promised a post about Lake George doctors...and one, (actually two) with a familiar name. My grandfather, Dr. Charles Horn, was one of the villages doctors back in the 1920s and 30s. He had previously served as the New York City Police Department Surgeon. Dr. Horn, his wife and 5 children including my mom, Helen Horn (later Helen Scoville, after marrying my dad, Francis, also from Lake George)....lived down on the Old Military Road, where Dr. Horn had his practice. Often, families could not afford to pay my grandfather when he treated them, or when he delivered their babies. He would offer his services for free but the families always insisted on paying him however they could...with chickens or vegetables or eggs. And he made house calls. During those same years, Dr. Horns sister, Dr. Eleanor Parsons, was also a Lake George village doctor. She lived in that little white house with black trim that sits next to Nordicks Motel. That house is where she had her practice. The two Dr. Horns had a brother, Harry Horn, Senior.....and he had a son, also named Harry Horn...who you may know as the owner of the Pink Roof ice cream stand and mini-golf on Beach Road. Also from Harrys family.....Helene Horn, who taught school at Lake George and still lives there....and her daughter, Karen. Karen, if you see this, you can check my family history, and let me know if I got it right. The pictures are of my grandfather, Dr. Charles Horn.
