I ran into Barry Cavin and his lovely bride Friday at lunch. He told me he is retiring from Gateway Baptist Church in December. (He turns 65 on December 22nd). I just want to give a plug to one of the finest human beings I have ever met. My late wife Celeste and I became members of Gateway on the same Sunday in April, 1986. In my humble opinion, that was the greatest hire Gateway ever made. Under Barrys leadership, the Gateway choir became one of the best in the state. The Christmas program was second to none, and that came from my fellow musicians who played with me in the Christmas orchestra. They turned down opportunities to play at bigger churches for the opportunity to play for Barry. On a personal note, whenever I had personal issues, Barry was there to counsel me. When we lost our daughter in 1991, Barry took care of all the arrangements. When I lost my parents in a fire in 2007, Barry was the first to call me. When Celeste passed away in 2010, Barry helped me make the arrangements. I have always wanted to see a job description on Barry, because he did so many things far beyond the call of duty. That was his nature! Thank you Barry for being my friend! Love you, Brother!
