I rarely share petitions on Facebook, believing that we all have causes that we believe in and we don’t need others hassling us to join another. BUT! The situation in Palestine is just unbearable and the Palestinians need your help. As stated in this appeal by Avaaz, Gaza is more or less an open prison, except that the prisoners can be shot at or bombed whenever it suits the Israelis. Don’t believe the BBC pro-Israeli propaganda depicting this as a conflict between two sides. It’s not. It’s a monumentally superior army, the fourth largest, and one of the best equipped, in the world, controlling and killing a people who have next to nothing. They don’t control their own water, their own land or their own safety. Imagine if London put walls around Croydon, controlled its access to water and goods, stopped people entering and leaving whenever it suited them and sent drones and rockets over to kill and maim every single day. And nobody held them to account. That’s what it’s like to live in occupied Palestine. There was a brief cease fire today, immediately following which three Palestinian children were killed in an Israeli rocket attack. The UN says that 80% of the more than 230 people who have died in Palestine are civilians. The Israelis are not targeting Hamas. They are targeting innocent people, many of whom are women and children. The Avaaz petition is simply calling upon banks, businesses and pension funds to stop supporting Israel. That means to stop them building any more settlements on Palestinian land and to stop selling arms to Israel. The American government won’t help the Palestinians, and there’s no sign of our government showing that they give a toss. So, it’s up to us, the people, to put pressure on Israel through peaceful means, by way of a massive economic boycott. Please, for the children of Palestine, sign this petition and do whatever else you can to help. Thank you.
