I read an article tonight about a father who, after the passing of his wife following a cesarean section, cared for his prematurely born son, who also passed away after 4 short days of life. Most notably was the father singing the song Blackbird by the Beatles to his then dying son. It strikes me that life is at times unconscionably sad and bitterly unfair. It only makes sense that mankind would look to a higher sense of purpose to ease the pain, to offer solace. A place where the dead will be reunited, where the earthly suffering need not be in vain. I am not a religious person. I used to be and have a deep sense of wonder, still, about matters of humanity. So no, I personally do not believe in the traditional happy ending for this husband and father bereft of his most cherished loved ones. But the beauty of his connections, his rich memories and his own capacity to act in the face of cruel circumstances, is what strikes me most about humanity. It is US. Whether you believe the conscious mind flows with a divine current or that we are simply aware by some other mysterious circumstance, doesnt matter so much to me as does the fact that we make heaven or hell here on earth. I know for me, personally, believing and living in a way where Im responsible to make good things happen without the aid of a Deity and where angels are the people around me who lift me up and comfort me, emboldens the very virtue of being sentient. I wish this father well. I hope that his memories comfort his sorrowful days ahead. Mankind, the experiences of life and our mutual interactions together leave me in awe. Something to ponder. We are the authors and the characters, in turn. youtu.be/0lNBcTkssWA
