I read in a postal: “GOD, YOU PROMISED ME MY DAILY BREAD. I WANT IT NOW!” Who is God here: God or the requester? The wisdom of man, it is said, is foolishness before God (cf 1 Cor 1:25); and yet human beings tend to act/request as if they are in the control of God. If God is God and our Creator it means He is above and we are below (Josh 2:11; Ps 146:6); He is the Master and we are the subjects; He is the Instructor and we are the pupils. In that case, we have to listen to Him tell us what to do (Jer 42:6). Even in our communications with Him (in Prayers) we find ourselves busy talking without listening to what he has to tell us – doing one way communication, with presumed feedback that God will do what we want. Following the premise that God is in the known of everything (1 Jn 3:20; cf 1 Cor 13:12), our dealings and communications with God should be that of a child listening to his/her father and learning. For the child who follows the instruction of the father is praised (Prov 13:1). Following in the instructions of God either directly as in the case of Abraham (Gen 22:2) or Moses (Ex 3:10) or through the prophets or priests, or the apostles (2Kg 17:13; Deut 18:15; 1Cor 3:5), is something that may look nonsensical or a difficult task. To make it concrete, If God speaks to you directly to sacrifice all your children to him (cf Gen 22), or asks you to go and pray for the person who wants you dead (cf Ex 3:10-12), or to sell all that you have, give the money to the poor and go staying in the Church (cf Lk 18:22) – will you do just that? Will you not say that this is the voice of the Devil? Asking for miracle or healing or favor from God needs faith – for without faith, it is impossible to please God, for those who must come to him must believe that He exists and He is able to reward those who earnestly seek Him (Heb 11:6). It also needs submitting to his WILL and do just what He tells you (James 4:7; Job 22:21). When Mary demanded miracle to save the bridegroom from disgrace; she submitted to the will of Her Son saying – Do whatever He tells you (Jn 2:5). The same was told Naaman when he was asked to wash in the river– he was told to do just as the prophet had said (2Kg 5:13). These people followed the instruction of God or of His servants, and they were favored. When you pray, who is in charge; God or You? Are you ever attentive to God; listening to Him telling you what to do; or you are busy doing the talking? Are you busy remembering Him His promises in the Scriptures while you yourself don’t keep your promises? Whatever God promises to do, he does (Dan 9:4; 1Cor 1:9) but you must be ready to do whatever he tells you (Gen 41:55). For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. For you will go out with joy And be led forth with peace” (Is 55:10-12). May the Lord bless you exceedingly, abundantly above you can ever ask or imagine (Eph 3:20; Ex 1:7). Be Blessed.
