I realize how influential my mother was in terms of the choices I make and what I find attractive in people in general. My mother was a beautiful woman and was constantly credited as such but despite that she never placed much value in that, was always natural , rarely wore makeup and didnt place any real value on appearances in herself or others. She never used her looks or affluence to compete with other women, nor did she value that in other people or make it a part of her criteria in dating. She dated many men who people superficially would have accused of not being attractive enough to date her. Socially she was never concerned with partying, keeping up with popular culture, was never chasing mens attention, or competing with other women for mens attention. Her friends were also people who shared the same values. She was a famous renowned childrens book author but routinely communicated to me how little that means in the world. That notoriety merely meant a lot of people knew who you are and that nobody deserved personal adulation simply because they were popular. She was very socially active in her community but also committed to helping individuals on a personal level with little thought to people social class or status etc. My mother was also very anti materialism and very pro character. She interacted with the rich and famous with the same dynamic, ease and respect as she did with the impoverished. Creativity was highly valued in our home, not just for the sake or creating but because there was an ethic involved in the creative process that helps develop character in individuals. Over and over there was a distinct message in her behavior that people I should surround myself with and respect were people with a strong sense of personal values and conscience first and intellectual capacity and critical thinking second.
