I really can’t let this night pass without some sort of - TopicsExpress

I really can’t let this night pass without some sort of unabashedly gushing mention of all the people I’ve worked with as part of the Yes movement. I’m so happy to have made so many new friends, and to have seen so many of my existing friends step up so readily. And what a campaign it’s been. Regardless of tomorrow’s result, the pro-independence movement WAS a massive success. When I first got involved just 18 months ago, Scottish independence was such an unlikely and distant possibility that I signed up as a Yes Scotland volunteer in the full belief that we didn’t stand a chance, but that it was important enough to fight for regardless. The gap in the polls felt insurmountable. I couldn’t possibly have imagined then that on the night of voting day most of us (on both sides) would genuinely feel we have no idea which way this is going to go. Or that Id be running around the streets an hour before voting closed with sheets of paper trying to ensure every last yes voter we knew of had gone to the polls, because somehow that might make the difference we needed. That’s a remarkable distance to travel in 18 months. And not only does it feel so close, most of us haven’t cared so much about the results of a political vote in our lives. For most people I know in Scotland, the difference of one word in the next few hours represents the difference between profound delight/relief, and profound disappointment/worry. Theres an almost total lack of ambivalence about the subject. And all this as the rest of the world is watching our wee country and wondering with us. And perhaps at us. Cliff-hanger, eh? So, to everyone I worked with at Yes Scotland (and everyone I didn’t), National Collective (you guys, seriously … wow), The Common Weal (Robin MacAlpine - *swoon*), Radical Independence Campaign, The Green Party, Women for Independence, The SNP, Labour for Independence, Wings Over Scotland, Bella Caledonia, Business for Scotland and everyone else (for you are too many to list in entirety); take a well earned bow. It’s been an honour and a blast. For me personally there’s no question this experience has been not just enriching but life changing. Thank you. And whatever the result, I believe, Scotland is already a new and different country, and one we all have every right to feel proud of. See you all on the other side.
