I really care about English grammar and style--probably more than I should. Despite the opinions of many of my fellow grammarians, I note that English writers have used the adjective less to modify countable nouns for centuries. According to the Cambridge Guide to English Usage, the pressure to substitute fewer for less most likely arose out of a desire to avoid ambiguity, such as that in the following sentence: I will give less expensive gifts this Christmas. Substituting fewer can certainly add clarity and remove ambiguity. But less is not technically wrong.
