I really wish the DFG would make it clear to fisherman that Great Whites are Protected Species and should be left alone... Juvenile Great Whites (under 12ft) are not known to attack sea mammals or humans... There are a ton of these sharks cruising the south bay and they really cause no harm whatsoever... Ok... So if you hook one by accident, it is enough of a drag... But if you get a bunch of fisherman working to spot them, then chumming and sending out live bleeding baits to entice their bite, fighting the fish for 30-40 minutes and next thing you know we have this situation... A caught and released, close to shore, agitated Great White Shark in fight or flight mode becoming an exception to the rule. I ask all pier and surf fisherman to please stick to the Halibut, Corbina, White Sea Bass, Perch etc. that are not going to get endanger swimmers and leave the sharks/rays alone.
