I recently came across this article on CNN, a news media outlet that in my opinion lies somewhere between a tabloid and moderate stance. CNNs Chief National Correspondent sums up this cycle as a why bother election, due to Americans frustration with a dysfunctional Washington. I dont post this to deter an already apathetic population against voting, but to point out the public disgust with the Democratic/Republican politics-over-policy mantra. These two groups will continue to put their parties before the people. In Washington, well be looking at two more years of debating the Affordable Care Act, likely nothing on Immigration Reform, and a disgraceful national debt that will remain the same or worse. In 2016, there will be two candidates up for election of President; will we experience any macro-level difference if the President is a Democrat or Republican? While I dont think a third party will solve all of these issues, I strongly believe it is a start. Mostly everyone I talk to acknowledge that the judicial, executive, and legislative branch of government is broken; thus, why would we all continue to vote the same way we have into the two-party system? The introduction of a third party on a large, equitable scale offers other solutions. In a pluralistic society, I would hope we can agree not to limit ourselves to two options of anything. I would argue with anyone that voting Democrat or Republican is not contributing to any solutions, solutions that this country desperately needs and solutions that the Dems/Repubs will not be able to act on.
