I recently purchased and received in the mails today a book, editions of which I have used for many years – The Negro Year Book, this one from 1931-32. I’ve used them before as library books, and many of the various years have recently been digitized and are available as free pdf’s. Still, I wanted to have a copy of at least one annual I could hold in my hands, and so found a very inexpensive and relatively pristine copy and bought it. When I received it, I noted that it had an owner’s signature in the flyleaf – George H. Hampton. In this enlightened age, I quickly searched for the name on-line, and found the likely original owner of my book. George Hampton was an African-American publisher, who was the owner, founder and publisher of a black newspaper, the Palmetto Leader, in Charleston, South Carolina, which began publication on January 10, 1925. Apparently little is known about Hampton, and his paper is not well remembered. But I will consider George H. Hampton, and see what we can see.
