I recently read a Facebook post where somebody accused me of having no heart because I (the IALHA President) had not publicly posted my condolences on Facebook when an IALHA member in another state experienced some very sad losses recently. To expect an officer of an organization the size of IALHA to know of all tragedies of such magnitude by all members is unrealistic. If one tries offering public condolences to all of them the likelihood is great that one will miss some because one was unaware of those tragedies. That might mistakenly really send the message that some are worthy of ‘official’ condolences while others are not. That is the reason I make it my practice as president not to offer them officially. That being said, I also tend to see grief and loss as very private thing. What the person who made the accusation must not have realized is that I had reached out to the member who had experienced the loss. I expressed my sympathy privately because I personally know that member. I wish people were not so quick to judge, nor so prone to put others in the stocks.
