I recently saw a statement from one of our fellow First Nation write... Damn racism is everywhere! The truth of the matter is... it may be everywhere but we must remember, not every non-native is racist. Racists are a minority in this world. As someone who travels all over Canada, I meet people everywhere who arent racist and really respect First Nations, Metis and Inuit Culture. Many are curious and open minded, if they havent yet been blinded or tainted by the ignorance of the stereotypes or racist beliefs, lol. They are fascinated by our creation stories, medicine wheel teachings, our understanding of how everything is interconnected and our spiritual beliefs. Our teachings, stories and oral histories/traditions all contain knowledge of what science has just discovered over the last few hundred years. Religion, Science and Indigenous Spirituality all have great similarities and likenesses that cannot be dispelled, dismissed or ignored by the intelligent mind. Many dont fully understand what assimilation, colonization or systemic racism is, nor are they aware of the extent of the damage the residential era has had on our people, but they know and accept that Indigenous people have been dealt several crappy hands. Even if they dont accept our cultural beliefs or understand real history, they are still accepting of everyone as equal, regardless of race or ethnicity. The truth is this: There are more non-racists out there than there are racists. Focus on everyone being racist and the world around you will be racist. Focus on the majority being non racist and the world around you will be non racist... with a few bad apples, lol. What you choose to focus on is what becomes your reality. In the end, hold your head high, walk tall with pride, know you are equal to all others, challenge the unintelligence of racism with education... and dont let a few bad apples ruin your pie! lol
