I recently watched an episode of Parks and Recreation about fluoride. While I understand the show is political satire and comedy, I still felt uneasy when the protagonist, Leslie Knope, says that fluoride is safe and it is good for you. Moreover, another character in the show says that fluoride is used by the communists to control our minds. Let me start of by saying that fluoride is not safe and it is not good for you. The fluoride added into the public water supply is a toxic industrial waste product. Fluoride is more poisonous than lead and slightly less poisonous than arsenic! Fluoride is not an essential nutrient, you do not get cavities from a fluoride deficiency. Ingestion of fluoride causes a myriad of health problems such as skeletal fluorosis, arthritis, thyroid disease, cancer, etc. The basis for the communists use fluoride quote in the show, comes from the supposed story that Hitler used fluoride in the concentration camps. This story comes from Charles Perkins, who was told this by a prominent Nazi chemist. He says that fluoride was used in the Nazi concentration camps to render the prisoners docile (somewhat like mind control). Regardless if the story is true, studies have shown that fluoride can cause neurological damage.
