I recently went on a Frijole planting mission with the amazing Costa Rican workers from the Ashram! It was an incredible day of learning! I experienced first hand how much work it takes for us to eat beans! It took 6 men all day to clear the second growth forest for the beans to be planted. Luckily this is a tropical ecosystem so to regrow will take only 18 months - 2 years. Even though it seems that we have decimated the landscape it actually provides incredible mulch for the soil. It is a very co-habitational way of farming. We first cut trails into the jungle, and Didier, the team leader, walked through and spread the beans. We then cleared the entire area. This creates the space for them to grow and for the sun to reach the beans. It was my first day using the machete, and Ive share a short clip of my first go!! youtu.be/QWyDSYsjJqI
