I recieved this email from Dr Rowitchs office regarding the stem cell trials and thought Id share the information regarding the trials and future research.... Thank you for your interest regarding the progress of University of California San Francisco Pelizaeus Merzbacher (PMD) clinical studies involving neural stem cell transplantation in the brain. These studies are all done in collaboration with StemCells Inc., Newark California. Although we cannot report a definitive plan for the next steps in clinical investigation, we wanted to provide an interim status report. First, we have pasted a link below to a previously released interim summary from the UCSF-StemCells, Inc. PMD phase I clinical study: investor.stemcellsinc/phoenix.zhtml?c=86230&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1844190&highlight= The study showed signs of engraftment and possible myelination in two of the four boys who underwent the stem cell procedure. This interim summary goes beyond our initial published paper (Gupta N, Henry RG, Strober J, Kang SM, Lim DA, Bucci M, Caverzasi E, Gaetano L, Mandelli ML, Ryan T, Perry R, Farrell J, Jeremy RJ, Ulman M, Huhn SL, Barkovich AJ, Rowitch DH (2012). Neural stem cell engraftment and myelination in the human brain. Sci Transl Med. 4, 155) to show durable changes two years after transplant. Secondly, our enquires to Stephen Huhn, Chief Medical Officer of StemCells, Inc. (Newark, CA), resulted in the following response regarding the current status and also the plan for potential future clinical studies. With the completion of the Phase I/II trial in the rare genetic disorder — Pelizaeus Merzbacher’s Disease (PMD) — and subsequent publication of the results, the company is currently pursuing a corporate strategy to seek a partner who will help carry forward the exciting findings into further clinical translation and a Phase II trial. The company is not abandoning PMD research and development, and will continue to explore potential collaborations that will allow the research to move into the next logical clinical phase. We hope this update is helpful to those of you interested in the status and planning for the potential future PMD clinical studies. We thank all families for their ongoing interest in this work and we will continue to provide periodic updates as more information becomes available.
