I remember taking my grandson to an orthodontist appt. a few months ago. I felt so lucky because although the waiting room was nearly full, all the magazines were still displayed perfectly (they order super magazines there!). I spent awhile getting first picks and then sat down. I sort of felt guilty from choosing so many, then looked carefully around, expecting to catch a few glares. Not one person was paying attention! Everyone was fiddling with their phones! That didnt change, one bit, for the whole time I waited, as one person after the other got called for their appts and others came in to begin waiting by checking their phones. Since that sobering experience, Ive noticed this isolationist behavior on numerous occasions.
