I remember when I was in elementary school I would celebrate my birthday and it would be no big deal because a birthday was a birthday. It just meant a huge class party. In middle school I started getting really weird looks when I told someone how old I turned, followed by a Youre ONLY ___ years old???? In high school the same thing happened, only sometimes more disrespectful comments would be added on: Wow, youre practically a baby. Why are you even in this class? 19 years later, I STILL get these comments. Except Ive changed my perspective on it. Because look. Im a sophomore in college whos graduating this next spring. Im president of a music association. Im an RA for my campus residence hall. Im in an academic honor society as well as a college student government association. Im a student ambassador and Ive got a 3.7 GPA. And ALL of this was done when I was 18. A baby. God-forbid someone as old as a recent high school senior act like a college sophomore. Thank you all for all the birthday wishes. I really do appreciate it :) its just, next time you compare someone to a newborn, remember not all of us act like one. I was raised to be mature, responsible, kind, and hard-working even if Im younger than most. And I fooled a lot of you. Age really is just a number.
