I remember when I worked for Dr. Spragins and Xan was sick with a high fever. I was parked in the back of Hollandale -Greenville Clinic and I went up front to register him. I came back to the car to get Xan and found Dr. Spragins sitting in the back seat with his stethoscope checking him out. Dr. Spragins was one of the last doctors to do house calls. I remember when Buck Williams was dying of emphysema and he would made routine checks at his house in Leland because of the difficulty of him going to the doctor. That was before the days of home health nurses. He was a unique man and I have so many memories of him during the years I worked for him. On days when we saw 200 patients a day with only two doctors there it was Dr. Spragins who saw the majority of the patients. He charged $15 a visit. He was the only doc in the Delta who many patients saw for help losing weight. We were devastated when he was diagnosed with Epstein Bahr virus three decades ago. He fought it hard. Even after he was forced to retire I could call him anytime day or night if I needed anything. A unique character to say the least and the last of a dying breed. God bless Dr. Spragins and his family and may he rest in peace.
