I responded to Joanne Courys post and now she has challenged me to post 8 things you might not know about me. Here goes: • Today is my daughter Aimee Codys 19th birthday. I love all my children, but there is something heart-melting when a daughter at any age glances at her father and smiles. (Luis Andre Gazitúa, Frank Diaz, Kevin Hill, Matthew Pinzur, and every father of a daughter knows what I am talking about.) • I cant snap my fingers. I have palms like catchers mitts and thick sausages for fingers. The geometry just aint right. • I have been a diabetic, my doctor tells, me for about 25 years, but did not catch it until about 5 year ago. No insurance and a feeling of invulnerability had me put off getting annual check ups for a very, very long time. Dont do what I did. See your doctor -- often, whether you have health insurance or not. Ive got it under control now, but I have very little feeling in my feet. • I wanted to be a writer when I was in college, but decided to get a law degree to have something to fall back on. When I realized my future grandchildren would never want to read my US Supreme Court briefs, I started writing children books as my way of making sure that I will always be able to tell them a bedtime story. (For the reason why, see entry above.) • My first job out of law school in 1981 was working for $13,000 a year as a legislative aide to Rep. William E. Bill Sadowski. Bill was the uncle to Vince Reynolds, my boyhood best friend and next door neighbor. I admired, respected, and, yes, loved Bill such that I would have worked for him for free. (And my wife, Rita Herrera-Cody, would have backed me up because she loved him, too.) •I wish I could write dialogue like Aaron Sorkin, keep a note of tension suspended in a thriller like Stephen King, or have the discipline to structure my work like John Grisham does. (BTW, Bill Thompson, the editor who discovered both King and Grisham, edited my first novel, Lying In State.) •I got a green belt in judo when I was in high school, attending classes with James Holbrook. I stopped to do debate in high school and he went into gymnastics. •I drove a 72 AMC Gremlin in college and would still love to have one today. Thats 8 things. Rest assured that if you like or respond to this, I WILL NOT tell you that you have to repeat this exercise. But then again, you might want to do it on your own. If so, blame me.
