I sat by the faint edges of yesterdays darkness at a wake-keep and my mind went ruminating. The scenario mimicked a Bach eve and the officiating cleric muttered a litany of great achievements of the man in question. i am sure he spoke from an honest mind but more so from a traditional perspective of never talking ill of a dead man. At a point I felt no one is in hell as at now. We preach hell or talk about hell but at funerals we say the person has gone to be with the Lord, we will meet someday. I am just extrapolating my thoughts and pouring out the products of the churning that took place in my mind. Certainly none is placed to give eternal verdicts but also placing one hopefully in our desirous abode lures us into the same trap. As though a band was swayed past my veiled mind, the flash of some persons writing sermons for clerics to preach on their funerals pulsated the almost somnolent heart. Yes! some do! Tell the people about the good things I did! If they were done they will indeed be known! So funny in this corporeal antics to determine postmortem our spiritual fate, some have resorted to inscribing on tomb stones as epitaphs scriptural verses. Giving a dead man the right dose of a drug will help in no way nor will a well crafted recipe for spiritual traveling make any meaning. It stroke me like a dart also about the fate of the corpus (body) after death that it marveled me so much about the question of burial rites. Do they have an impact on your destination? If God is Spirit then the flesh is but an ethereal component for terrestrial nourishment. If it doesnt what kind of prayer then befits a funeral ceremony? And for who? the deceased or the bereaved? There is nothing more worthy than building ourselves in the most holy faith, asking the Holy Spirit to grill your flesh that the smoke thereafter be an acceptable incense before God while we are still alive. Our merciful God is also a just God.
