I saw “Iron Man 2,” and was duly impressed. It was everything the ads say it is: an action thrill-ride, a special effects masterpiece, a worthy addition to the pantheon (pun intended) of excellent comic book adaptations. It was about as good as I could have hoped, with a sequel transition on par with “Spider-Man 2.” The effects were excellent, and the battle sequences were awe-inspiring. One thing that I don’t usually comment on is sound design, but every now and then a film displays exceptionally well-done audio, and this one did it in spades. The sound effects didn’t just support the visual effects, they amplified them, giving the film an authenticity that it would not have had otherwise. Robert Downey, Jr. captured the pathos of Tony Stark, a man battling demons he’s not even aware of, and gave a depth to the character that I was hoping he would bring. Mickey Rourke was good as Whiplash, and was able to make one of the more asinine villains a credible threat. Gwyneth Paltrow (admittedly not one of my favorite actresses) was even on her game, making Pepper Potts a person, not just an afterthought. No, the afterthought was Scarlett Johansson, who as far as I can tell served absolutely no purpose in the film other than to give Tony come-hither glances from time to time and display absurdly implausible ass-kicking skills. The only other thing I wasn’t all squishy over was the final battle sequence. For as excellent as the build-up was, it seemed to be a bit lacking. I would like to have seen a bit more of the awesome hand-to-hand combat displayed earlier in the film. Still, there isn’t much I would change with this one. (The kicker at the end of the credits was fun, even though I saw it coming a mile away.) I highly recommend “Iron Man 2,” with the express suggestion that you see it on the big screen. It’s worth every penny you’ll spend on it. $8 05/07/10
