I saw a lot of things yesterday telling me to Never Forget. Trust me when I say a lot of New Yorkers look downtown every day at a single tower and Remember. But I wanted to talk about something a lot of people have forgotten, 9-12. That was the next day. The day we woke up and remembered it had happened. The day we wondered what would be next. The day a lot of people never left their apartments. But if you had gone out that day, if you had left the house, you hugged your kids a little tighter. You looked at your loved ones and told them, really told them, I love you when you left, and you meant it. People saw total strangers and asked if they were okay. Doors were held open, kindness was exchanged. Yeah, we all still flinched when sirens sounded, we marveled at how the sky could be so blue again, like nothing had happened. We had seen that life can be unfair and brutal but one of our initial responses had been kindness. So Id like to propose that we try that today. Smile at a random person. Hold the door open. Tell someone you love them and mean it. Just give it a try and think about giving it a shot more often. Remember the 12th, help each other out.
