I saw a troubling story on 60 Minutes this weekend. You can watch it at the bottom of this update. Down in the Central Valley (California) the aquifers are being pumped out by the farmers to make up for the lack of rain. Its Californias food belt and the water is deemed necessary to the economy and to keeping food available. But now, even the deepest groundwater is being depleted at an alarming rate. The same thing is happening in India and China too, pumping the groundwater to borrow against a drought. Draining the aquifers. Emptying the earth. Yes, it will probably rain again, and the groundwater will fill up again. BUT, these deep wells will not fill up in our lifetime, and we keep draining them. There are systems in development to convert sewage into potable water, but as promising as that is, it takes a long time and a lot of money. We always come up with these band aid solutions, borrowing against the future. Cheating the inevitable. There doesnt appear to be enough will, at least not on the part of politicians and big business, for renewable energy and sustainable practices, The public need to demand it now. The sky isnt falling, but we sure arent doing it any favours with our dirty industries. cbsnews/news/depleting-the-water/
