I sit here wondering why Obama did not make this speech six years ago. Why he has spent the last 6 years giving away the positions on which he campaigned in 2008. It occurs to me that we may be seeing the real Obama for the first time. He no longer has to try to keep the Democrats in Congress happy. They are in the minority in both houses - in many ways powerless. There are no more elections during his Presidency. He simply does not have to placate his own party. And he has absolutely no reason to think the Republicans will work with him in any way. In short - there are no longer any tactical reasons for compromising and abandoning his values. It will be interesting to see where this President goes in the next two years...
