I sometimes seriously wonder, whats going on in Calcutta? (Yes, Calcutta, I abhor the name Kolkata and what it is resembling lately) The city and entire state cannot provide jobs and career options to people, the few select rich is getting richer, poor is getting poorer and the middle class is stuck in a blue funk with no way out. The only option is fleeing the city and state and settle somewhere else, leaving our near ones, our vicinity and people sharing our mother tongue. Sadly, most of the students who are protesting today will run out of the state at the first chance with better career options. College will be over, Campusing will be done, jobs will beckon from different parts of the country and even abroad and the cycle will come to an end. At the most to the majority it will be a fond nostalgic moment for them when they sip expensive liquor from cut glass in their tranquility, there will be exceptions of course, but I am not too sure of them as well. Whereas, the same inept governance will remain, the same brutal police will prevail, the Didi might go but her place will be taken by another Dada who will do zilch to improve the situation. Protests, campaigns, processions and slogans will continue while mills, factories and industries will also continue to close down (are there still a few left?). Malls will spring up, where the financially ruling non-Bengali (not mentioning the race) will keep on making more money while the Bengali middle class will keep on spending on vain clothes and least nutritious yet obscenely priced food. Our earnings will be siphoned off by the financially ruling class, whereas we engage ourselves in maa mashi bou tv serials, latest Bindaas films of a certain superstar cum M.P, who surely made a deal with the devil like Jyoti Basu to be such monstrously lucky and showered by fortune in life without much redeeming qualities. Dont worry, we will keep on protesting, strumming guitars, assemble in public places for peaceful demonstrations, quote Marx, Lenon (not Lenin, he is just too colored for our taste), Dylan, Shakti, Nabarun et al. We will keep ourselves occupied as we smoke up, girls and boys, beatniks and bohemians alike, dissecting socialist, democratic pacifist ideologies and pretend it is the age of flower power all over again. Why not? Its cool to be a hippie! We keep ourselves drugged by the dream of revolution and uprising whereas regime after regime the same and similar set of people (Read politicians, police, and businessmen) will keep on dragging this state down. Remember it is not a machinery of oppression that runs WB, it is a machinery of submersion which is slowly sinking this state into oblivion as we try to grab on to the final straws of a few august individuals of our supposedly glorious past, Tagore, Ray, Uttam, Panchamda Kishore jug jug jio, and you will live for an eternity because as shameful as it sounds there will be no one to take your place, we have become just too incapable as a race in the last 40 odd years. The city of Joy has indeed become a City of Sorrows. #hokkolorob tobe ei kolorob jeno aageo shunechhi. Shob-i chapa pore gechhe shomoyer shathe. Thank you and good night.
