I sometimes wonder where peoples humanity is and feel saddened at how callous some people can be when they see a person in need of help. Tonight the baby squirrel and I were driving out of town to have dinner with Andreas at our place I call our cottage. Im at the stop light at the highway as it approaches the bridge over the river out of town and I see a man on the sidewalk across the way fall in his wheelchair. His chair fell over and he was on the ground tangled in it. This is a long stop light so I watched as he wrestled himself up, got his chair up and tried to get himself in. I could see he was missing his leg below the knee. I had my phone in my hand to call 911 but saw he got reseated. Just as the light turned he rolled off the sidewalk and into right lane of the highway. Cars were whizzing past him and not one even seemed to slow. As I turned into the lane he was in I slowed my truck to a crawl blocking traffic and pulled up beside him. I yelled out my passenger window asking if he needed help and I could see he was hurt from the fall. He said yes please. So I drove slowly beside him for a short distance till a place we could safely get off the highway. All this time Im thinking he is one of the many homeless I see in our town, yes several in wheel chairs. It turns out he is not homeless or even local but has been visiting friends in a town about 15 miles away. He had left his vehicle and rode to our town with neighbors of his friends who had invited him out but these were not people he knew at all. They left him stuck in a strange town in a wheel chair and stole his wallet. He couldnt reach his friends on the phone and the local police did not help him. It turns out he just finished treatment for stage four bone cancer and is a vet who had traveled all over the world. Yes I drove him to his car. A very nice Land Rover. None of this I knew BEFORE putting him in my truck. He told me that I was the only person to not look at him like he was nothing in the several hours he had been stranded. Helping someone in need should be something we all do. To give a little of your time, not just money, is something that will ultimately return to you in some way. Even a kind word or simple gesture can mean so much to another. Every tiny bit of light you shine pushes the dark back just a tiny bit. Enough light and the darkness fades
