I spent a few hours today to try and come up with a neat way of doing decals in Unity, and ended up with this! Its using triangle-clipping rather than some approximate grid-raycast solution, so its super tightly fit to the actual shape of the underlying geometry :) Its also fast enough to run real-time, and since its just geometry, it can easily be used with almost any shader you want, be it additive, multiplicative, alpha blended, opaque, etc!
