I spent an evening on Secondlife a bit ago doing something I havent since 2006. My friend and I found a main-island on the grid and just rode a vehicle through the landscape. No search bar, no url entries, just a big virtual reality roadtrip across a long abandoned mesh of strange user created sights. We saw a towering column of biodomes stretching toward the atmosphere. An abandoned city dedicated to cars. Two chrome penises both the size of motor homes. A perfect recreation of The Nautilus from 20,000 leagues under the sea. A self-driving tank. At the end of the journey I technically went nowhere and saw nothing, but I came away with stories and experiences that would have eluded me if I had not set out to see them. Secondlife, Its an unwieldy wasteland but with the right kind of eyes its a utopia of the most surreal.
